Mother's final duty to soldier son -- escort his body home

In a battle in Eastern Afganastan on October 3rd, Spc.Stephan Mace lost his life in a Talliban attack on their base. Followed by 7 other soldiers, Mace was flown home with a flag drapped over his casket. In another manner though, Mace was flown home by his mother, Vanessa Adelson. She said that she brought her son into this world, so it was her duty to see her son to his final resting place. Vanessa remembers right before her 21 year old son was deployed to Afganastan that his mother gave him a Saint Christopher Medalian for protection. One of the soldiers that survived this attack told Vanessa that her son lived about an hour and a half after being shot. When he was just sitting there, he gave another man his medal, this was what Mace was all about, comforting people in times of need. Some thing that helped Mace rest in peace as well as helping his mother be in peace.

I think when it comes to the war in Iraq and Afganastan it gives me chills even thinking about going to war. Last year my brother was deployed to Iraq for a year and he was under attack on multiple occasions. It just adds pressure to the thought of, what if my brother would have been attacked and not made it. That is how I can relate to Spc. Mace. He makes me think of a hero in time of suffering and need. A person who was meant to be a soldier and can be a prime example for soldiers alike everywhere. In the time of suffering and nearing death, Spc. Mace probably had a good idea that he would not make it through the hour. Instead of just laying there and letting death happen though, Mace took and used the last part of life that he had left. Helping others around endure, while keeping his honor and dignity. Spc.Mace will forever be labeled a hero and a dedicated soldier, of the Army and God.
